Research Description: I am working directly with Ron Carter to construct an analysis of his innovative 1995 recording of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. I draw from Carter’s explanation of his approach. I discuss how Carter, an American jazz bassist, expands on the historical practice of improvisation in the Brandenburg Concerto.
